Mini-Split System FAQs

A ductless mini split system is a small central air unit with the flexibility of cooling and heating one or more rooms (zones). It is comprised of an indoor unit called the evaporator that’s connected to an outdoor unit called the condensing unit through a very small hole in the exterior wall.

Mini-split systems work like conventional HVAC systems. When it’s hot outside, the unit cools your zone(s) with refrigerant and by absorbing heat from your home and moving it outside. It works the reverse in the winter, by taking in heat from the outside air to heat your home. The result is efficient year-round cooling and heating for total comfort.

Central air systems require expensive duct work and cutting holes in floors, walls and ceilings. You also need to take up valuable space with ductwork and the unit itself.  Mini-split systems minimize the impact on your home, while giving you more control over heating and cooling. You can create multiple zones and only use the systems when someone is occupying a zone. This greatly reduces your energy costs as you are not heating or cooling an entire home when only zone is being used.

All air conditioners will make some sort of noise, however ductless mini-split systems are engineered to be quieter than other units. Since the compressor sits outside and the indoor unit is designed with a noise levels as low as 28 dB (compatible to a light breeze), you don’t have to worry about the unit being too noisy.

Mini-split systems have a lifetime of 10 to 15 years.

Like conventional HVAC systems, mini-split systems should be serviced at least once a year. During a service appointment, we will look at hoses for blockages and refrigerant leaks, as well as electrical connections and run capacitors, and we’ll let you know if anything needs repairing or replacing. An annual maintenance service is the best way to keep your system working properly.
